About
Sara Eloy is graduated in Architecture (1998) and is a PhD Student in Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. Her Ph.D. thesis sets off with the premise that the future of real estate market in Portugal will require the rehabilitation of existing residential areas and that it will be of utmost importance the incorporation of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) and domotic as well as the transformation of dwellings to respond to the new demands of dwellers.
The ongoing research has three objectives. First, the definition of the functions of housing in the current Information Society, through the analysis of the impact produced by the integration of ICT in the dwelling space. Secondly the definition of the adequate set of ICT to incorporate in the dwelling spaces. Finally the definition of design guidelines to support architects in the adaptation of existing residential areas with the purpose of ICT incorporation.
The study focus on a specific building type (“rabo-de-bacalhau”) built between 1945 and 1965 in Lisbon, mainly because their topology is very representative of the period and it follows the similar generative principles.
The goal is to use Shape Grammar and Space Syntax as tools to identify and encode the principles and rules be-hind the adaptation of existing houses to new requirements. The idea is to use such rules as part of a methodology to follow in the rehabilitation of existing dwellings.
At the Department of Architecture and Urbanism at ISCTE-IUL in Lisbon, Sara teaches disciplines of Building Technologies, CAD and computation.
