Several years ago he used to study and perform theatre and that gave him a special interest on topics like performance studies and art.
He has conducted research in the Portugal since 1989, initially investigating rural communities and processes of social reproduction and transition; since the first fieldwork, he realizes that cultural performances are key elements for the (understanding of) social construction of local identity. Since 1998 he has focused on the study of cultural performances and the connections with tourism, showing the local appropriation of the categories of identity, memories and past, tradition (authenticity) and sense of belonging. He had conduct research recently on re-enactment history as touristic events. And finally, he is beginning a new trend of research interests on migration, focusing on sex work and sexual tourism.
